Sova-M 1/72 Grumman SA-16A Albatross (72024)

An amphibian built for rescue

Sova-M’s 1/72 scale Grumman SA-16A Albatross represents a distinctive post-war amphibious aircraft associated with search-and-rescue operations. Kit 72024 offers a subject whose boat-shaped hull and twin-engine layout reflect its ability to operate from both land and water.

Historical background

The Grumman Albatross first flew in 1947 and was developed for duties including rescuing aircrew at sea. Its amphibious design combined a flying-boat hull with retractable landing gear, allowing it to use conventional airfields as well as suitable stretches of water.

The SA-16A was an early United States Air Force designation for the Albatross. These aircraft served in the air-rescue role, including during the Korean War, where recovering downed aircrew was an important and demanding task. Under the unified American aircraft designation system introduced in 1962, the SA-16A became the HU-16A.

Rescue missions depended on navigation, endurance and the judgement of crews working in changing sea and weather conditions. The Albatross became a recognisable part of post-war rescue aviation, with the wider family also serving other American military branches and overseas operators.
