The Supermarine Seafire Mk.15 was the first Griffon-engined carrier-based Spitfire variant to enter service in significant numbers, powered by the Rolls-Royce Griffon VI driving a five-bladed propeller and introducing a much-needed improvement in engine power over the Merlin-engined marks that preceded it. Entering Fleet Air Arm service in 1945, the Mk.15 arrived too late for combat in the European war but served post-war with FAA squadrons and was exported to the Royal Canadian Navy, which operated it into the early 1950s. Special Hobby’s 1/48 kit covers both FAA and RCN examples — a well-chosen pairing that gives the builder a broader choice of markings for this less commonly modelled naval Spitfire variant.
