The Sikorsky CH-37 Mojave was the US Army’s first large piston-engine heavy-lift helicopter, entering service in 1956 and capable of carrying vehicles, artillery pieces, and downed aircraft that were beyond the reach of any earlier rotorcraft. Its two radial engines were mounted in large nacelles on either side of the fuselage to keep the cabin floor clear — a configuration that gave it a distinctive, purposeful silhouette quite unlike any contemporary helicopter. The Mojave served until the early 1970s, bridging the gap between the piston era and the turbine-powered heavylifters that replaced it. Special Hobby’s 1/72 kit covers a subject that receives far less attention than its historical significance warrants.
