The de Havilland Mosquito PR Mk.XVI was the definitive long-range photo-reconnaissance variant of an aircraft already remarkable for its performance — a pressurised, unarmed, twin-Merlin reconnaissance platform capable of operating at altitudes and speeds that made interception almost impossible. The Mk.XVI introduced a pressure cabin for high-altitude operations and additional fuel capacity to extend range over the PR Mk.IX it succeeded, and it served with RAF and USAAF photo-reconnaissance units from 1943 through to the end of the war, bringing back imagery from targets across occupied Europe that no other aircraft could safely reach.
