The Messerschmitt Bf 109E — the Emil — was the aircraft that fought the Battle of Britain, entered service in the Spanish Civil War, and established German air superiority over Poland and France before meeting its match over southern England in the summer of 1940. The E-4 was the definitive Battle of Britain variant, incorporating an improved MG FF/M cannon and revised cowling that addressed some of the earlier E-series shortcomings. Daimler-Benz DB 601-powered and capable of 354mph, it was a highly capable fighter that the 109’s fundamental range limitation condemned to escort missions it could not adequately fulfil. Special Hobby’s 1/72 short-run kit offers an alternative to the mainstream toolings of this essential subject with characteristic short-run detail quality.
