The Curtiss P-40K was a development of the Warhawk series powered by the Allison V-1710-73 engine, and the K-1 and K-5 were early production blocks that retained the shorter fuselage of preceding marks before the K-10 introduced the lengthened rear fuselage to address directional stability problems. The short-fuselage K-1/5 served in the Pacific, Middle East, and Soviet Union under Lend-Lease, and represents a specific and often overlooked production block with its own identifying characteristics. Special Hobby’s 1/72 kit targets this precise variant distinction — the kind of subtlety that appeals to P-40 specialists who have built the mainstream toolings and want something more specific.
