The Vickers Wellington was the RAF’s primary heavy bomber from the outbreak of war until superseded by the four-engine heavies in 1942 — a twin-engine medium bomber of extraordinary structural resilience thanks to Barnes Wallis’s geodetic construction, which allowed it to absorb battle damage that would have destroyed a conventional airframe. The Mk.IC was the most produced Wellington variant, introducing numerous detail improvements and serving with Bomber Command on the early night offensive against Germany, with Coastal Command on anti-submarine patrol, and with Middle East Air Force across North Africa and the Mediterranean.
