The Infantry Tank Mk. II Matilda was the British Army’s most important tank of the early war — its armour of up to 78mm proof against all standard German anti-tank weapons in 1940 and 1941, making it virtually impervious to anything in the Axis arsenal except the 88mm Flak gun. The Matilda dominated the early desert campaign, carrying the 8th Army’s initial offensives, until the proliferation of the 88mm in the anti-tank role and the arrival of the Panzer III and IV Special rendered it outclassed. The Mk. III/IV variants were the final production versions with detail improvements and the 2-pounder gun. Tamiya’s 1/35 kit is a thorough treatment of this important vehicle.
