The Cromwell was the fastest British cruiser tank of the Second World War — powered by the Rolls-Royce Meteor (a de-rated Merlin aero engine) and capable of 40mph on roads, giving armoured reconnaissance regiments a vehicle that could genuinely exploit a breakthrough rather than simply keep pace with infantry. The Mk. IV was the main gun variant armed with the QF 75mm, effective against enemy armour at medium ranges and dual-purpose against infantry. The 7th Armoured Division and the armoured reconnaissance regiments of 11th Armoured and Guards Armoured used the Cromwell in Normandy and Northwest Europe.
