The German battleship Tirpitz — Bismarck’s sister ship — spent most of the war achieving her strategic purpose simply by existing: her presence in Norwegian fjords pinned down substantial elements of the Royal Navy's Home Fleet and caused the catastrophic scattering of convoy PQ17 in July 1942, which resulted in the loss of 24 merchant ships without Tirpitz firing a single shot. The RAF and Fleet Air Arm mounted operation after operation to destroy her, finally succeeding in November 1944 when RAF Lancaster bombers hit her with 12,000lb Tallboy bombs and she capsized at Tromsø. Tamiya’s 1/350 kit captures Tirpitz in her Norwegian fjord configuration, the companion piece to their iconic Bismarck.
The battleship that won by doing nothing — Tirpitz in 1/350 scale.
