The Grumman FM-1 Wildcat — built by General Motors as the Eastern Aircraft FM-1 and known in Royal Navy service as the Martlet Mk.V — was the primary carrier fighter of the US Navy and Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm through the critical years of 1942 and 1943, before the Hellcat arrived in numbers to replace it. Rugged, manoeuvrable at low speed, and fitted with the self-sealing tanks and armour that Japanese fighters lacked, the Wildcat achieved a kill ratio over the Zero that belied its apparent performance disadvantage through superior pilot training and tactical discipline. Tamiya's 1/48 kit covers both the USN FM-1 and the FAA Martlet Mk.V in one box.
