The North American P-51B Mustang represents the critical transitional variant — the first Merlin-engined Mustang to enter combat, transforming a mediocre airframe into the finest escort fighter of the war almost overnight. The razorback fuselage and framed canopy of the B model give it a different character from the later bubble-canopy D, and many 8th Air Force aces scored the majority of their victories in the B model before the D arrived in quantity. The distinctive Malcolm hood retrofit that gave the pilot improved rearward visibility is a characteristic detail of many combat-veteran B models.
