USS Indianapolis was the US Navy heavy cruiser with perhaps the most dramatic final chapter in American naval history — after delivering the components of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima to Tinian, she was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58 on 30 July 1945 and sank in twelve minutes. Of her 1,195 crew, approximately 900 survived the sinking only to spend four days in shark-infested waters before rescue, with only 316 men ultimately surviving. The Indianapolis tragedy led directly to changes in US Navy procedures for reporting overdue ships. Tamiya's 1/700 Waterline kit captures the cruiser in her wartime configuration.
