The Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki — Allied codename “Tojo” — was the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force's primary interceptor of the middle and late war period, designed specifically for high-speed climb and interception rather than the low-speed manoeuvrability that characterised most Japanese fighters. Fast, well-armed by Japanese standards, and capable of the zoom-and-boom tactics that American fighters used against the Zero, the Ki-44 was the first JAAF aircraft that could seriously threaten the B-29 Superfortress raids over the home islands in 1944 and 1945. Tamiya's 1/72 kit is an accurate and crisply detailed rendering of this important but often overlooked Japanese fighter.
