The Russian Kilo-class submarine — NATO designation “Kilo”, Russian designation Project 636 Varshavyanka — is one of the quietest diesel-electric submarines in the world, earning the nickname “Black Hole” from NATO acoustic analysts due to its exceptionally low noise signature. Armed with six 533mm torpedo tubes capable of launching torpedoes, mines, and cruise missiles, the Kilo class has been widely exported to India, China, Algeria, Iran, and Vietnam, making it one of the most proliferated submarine designs in service. Trumpeter’s 1/144 kit captures the Kilo class in accurate external detail at a scale that makes the distinctive tear-drop hull and fin arrangement clearly visible.
