USS Detroit AOE-4 was a Sacramento-class fast combat support ship — the US Navy’s most capable underway replenishment vessels, able to transfer fuel, ammunition, and stores simultaneously to warships on either beam while steaming at fleet speed of 26 knots. Fast combat support ships were the logistical backbone of the US Navy’s carrier strike groups, enabling the fleet to operate indefinitely without returning to port for replenishment. Detroit served from 1969 and participated in operations across the Cold War era. Trumpeter’s 1/700 kit offers the opportunity to model this often-overlooked but operationally essential class of warship.
