The AS-2 was a Soviet airfield starter vehicle — a ground power and engine start unit used to start the engines of aircraft on forward airstrips where electrical ground power was not available from fixed installations. Airfield starter vehicles were the unglamorous but essential support equipment without which no air force could function, and the AS-2 in its various configurations served Soviet aviation throughout the war years on grass strips and improvised airfields across the Eastern Front. This is a rewarding and unusual diorama subject for modellers building Soviet airfield scenes. UM Models’ 1/72 kit captures this airfield support vehicle.
