The Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf. F was an early production variant of Germany’s main battle tank, carrying the short 50mm KwK 38 gun that represented a significant step forward from the 37mm armament of the earliest marks. Ausf. F vehicles served in the French campaign of 1940 and in the opening phases of Operation Barbarossa, where they encountered Soviet armour that their guns could not reliably penetrate. The Panzer III Ausf. F represents the German armoured force at the height of its tactical confidence, before the shock of the T-34 and KV-1 forced a rethink of German tank design priorities. UM Models’ 1/72 kit captures this early Panzer III variant.
