The Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf. G was the main German battle tank of the early war period — the vehicle that spearheaded the campaigns in Poland, France, the Balkans, and the opening phase of Operation Barbarossa before the arrival of Soviet T-34s and KV-1s exposed the limitations of its 50mm gun and armour. The Ausf. G introduced the 5cm KwK 38 gun that replaced the earlier 37mm weapon, a significant improvement in anti-tank capability that still proved inadequate against Soviet heavy armour. The Panzer III in its various sub-types formed the backbone of German panzer divisions through 1941 and 1942. UM Models’ 1/72 kit captures the Ausf. G in accurate early-war configuration.
