The Junkers Ju 88 was the most versatile German aircraft of the Second World War — designed as a fast bomber, it was adapted to the roles of heavy fighter, night fighter, torpedo bomber, dive bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, and pathfinder, serving on every front from the Arctic to the Sahara throughout the war. The Ju 88A was the principal bomber variant, forming the backbone of the Luftwaffe’s medium bombing capability through the Battle of Britain, the Blitz, the Mediterranean, and the Eastern Front.
