The Vickers Valetta was a twin-engined medium transport aircraft that served as the backbone of RAF Transport Command’s medium-lift capability in the late 1940s and 1950s — replacing the wartime Dakotas on routes across the Middle East, East Africa, and the Far East and providing the airlift capacity for numerous post-war operations including the Malayan Emergency, the Berlin Airlift support role, and operations in the Canal Zone. The Valetta C.Mk.1 was the primary cargo variant, able to carry troops, freight, or casualty evacuation loads in the slab-sided fuselage that gave it an unglamorous but thoroughly workmanlike appearance. Valom’s 1/72 kit captures this important and under-modelled RAF transport.
