The Vickers Wellesley was a single-engine monoplane bomber that entered RAF service in 1937 — the first production aircraft to use Barnes Wallis’s geodetic lattice construction method, the same structure later used in the Wellington, which gave the Wellesley exceptional structural strength at low weight. Wellesleys served with distinction in East Africa during the opening year of the war, bombing Italian targets in Eritrea, Somalia, and Abyssinia, and three aircraft had set a world long-distance record in 1938 flying non-stop from Egypt to Australia. Valom’s 1/72 kit captures the Wellesley Mk.I in the honest, squared-off lines of this geodetically-built bomber.
